Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is defined as pain which lasts for longer than 12 weeks following an injury and has not responded to medication or treatment. For most people, symptoms will gradually settle within 12 weeks of an injury and they will be able to return to their normal activities. Unfortunately, for some people this doesn’t always happen. There can be a variety of reasons why pain persists and in the majority of cases, it is due to a combination of factors. Although chronic pain may seem daunting, there are ways of improving pain and getting back to the things you enjoy. At Mode Physiotherapy, we have experience of working with people with chronic pain and helping them to manage their symptoms more effectively.
Important symptoms to monitor

If you have symptoms in different parts of your body, take a look at each section of our website for advice on specific symptoms to look out for.

If you have chronic pain and you have any of the following, then we would recommend you speak with your GP soon:

  • General feeling of malaise (tiredness)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Pain that wakes you and keeps you awake for a long time at night

You may also notice feeling low in mood. If you ever feel extremely depressed or have considered hurting yourself in some way then please speak with your GP, call 111 or contact the Samaritans for urgent support

Carrying out routine scans is not required in most cases. Around 95% of scans will show normal age related and coincidental findings which may not be related to your symptoms. An assessment by a physiotherapist will be able to determine if you require a scan.

There is nothing that you should avoid when having chronic pain, but you do need to listen to your symptoms and adjust your activities accordingly.

It is important to keep moving as much as possible. There may be some activities that are painful, but this doesnt mean that is it causing you any damage. One of our physiotherapists will be able to work with you to get you back doing the activities you enjoy.

It is important to discuss pain relief with your local pharmacist or GP. If your pain levels are better controlled, this will enable you to keep more active and by keeping active it will help to maintain your strength and movement. This approach could lead to a quicker recovery.

A physiotherapist will be able to advise if you need to discuss pain relief with your GP or Pharmacist.
